Women’s History Month
Today marks the start of Women’s History Month. Traditionally, Women’s History Month is a time to reflect on women in our history who never got their due, who were ignored in favor of the men making history, and who worked, unsung, to advance the causes of humanity.
When I think about women in history, I think about those who came before us and made history. However, I also think about the issues that directly and disproportionately affect women and the issues that plague us all but are uncured because we consider them women’s work. Throughout this month, I will be sending emails addressing those issues that are traditionally considered women's issues and those issues that we do not address because they fall into the sphere of womanhood. I know we can address all of these issues more completely and continue to work towards a better Nashville for all.
Today, though, let’s take time to acknowledge the women who served our City on Metro Council. When I was born in Nashville, there were only two women serving on Council. By the time my youngest daughter was born, women had achieved parity on Metro Council. Let us celebrate all these women who made history. If you see them or their loved ones, or if you pass something you know they did to make a neighborhood better, say thanks. These women and their achievements deserve it.
